Why Get Your Valves Cleaned?
Performing an intake valve carbon cleaning can offer several advantages, particularly for modern engines with direct fuel injection (DI). Here are some key benefits:
1. Improved Engine Performance: Carbon buildup on intake valves can restrict airflow into the combustion chamber, leading to reduced engine performance. Cleaning the intake valves helps restore optimal airflow and can enhance engine responsiveness and acceleration.
2. Increased Fuel Efficiency: A clean intake system allows for better air-fuel mixture formation, which can improve fuel combustion and efficiency. This often translates to better fuel economy and fewer trips to the gas station.
3. Reduced Emissions: Carbon deposits can affect combustion efficiency, leading to incomplete burning of fuel and increased emissions. Cleaning the intake valves helps ensure a more complete burn, which can reduce harmful emissions and help your vehicle meet environmental standards.
4. Smoother Engine Operation: Carbon buildup can cause rough idling, engine knocking, or misfires. Removing these deposits helps the engine run more smoothly and quietly, enhancing overall driving comfort.
5. Prevention of Engine Damage: Over time, excessive carbon buildup can lead to engine damage or increased wear on components. Regular cleaning helps prevent this buildup, potentially extending the life of the engine and its parts.
6. Improved Throttle Response: Carbon deposits can cause sticky or sluggish throttle response. Cleaning the intake valves can help restore a more immediate and predictable throttle response.
7. Better Starting Performance: If carbon buildup has been affecting the engine’s ability to start smoothly, cleaning the intake valves can improve cold starts and overall starting performance.
8. Maintenance of Warranty: For some vehicles, regular maintenance including intake valve cleaning can be important for maintaining manufacturer warranties. It’s always a good idea to check the vehicle’s service recommendations and warranty requirements.
Regular intake valve cleaning can be a valuable part of your vehicle’s maintenance routine, especially if you notice symptoms of carbon buildup.
Intake Carbon Cleaning at Our Oshawa and Scarborough Shops
We perform intake carbon cleaning (walnut blasting) at both of our shops. Drivers in Oshawa, Whitby, Courtice and Bowmanville can book at our Oshawa shop. Drivers in Scarborough, Markham and Pickering can book at our Scarborough shop. Ajax drivers can use either one.
Both shops are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm. Book in Oshawa (905-432-7584) or book in Scarborough (905-288-7985).
Signs Your Engine May Need a Carbon Cleaning
Direct-injection engines spray fuel straight into the cylinder, so nothing washes the carbon off the intake valves. It builds up over time. Common signs are:
Rough idle
Misfires or a shaky start on cold mornings
Hesitation or slow throttle response
Lower fuel economy
Less power or boost on turbocharged engines
A check engine light with misfire codes
These symptoms can also come from other faults, such as ignition coils, spark plugs or sensors, so we start with a diagnostic when the cause is not clear.
Which Cars Need It?
Any direct-injection gasoline engine can build up intake carbon, whether it is turbocharged or naturally aspirated. We have extensive experience with modern BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz engines, and we also clean Volkswagen engines. Not sure if your car is direct injection? Send us the year, make and model.
Carbon Cleaning FAQ
What is intake carbon cleaning (walnut blasting)?
It is a service that removes baked-on carbon from the intake valves and ports of direct-injection engines using crushed walnut shells. The shells are hard enough to remove the carbon and soft enough not to damage the metal.
Why can’t a fuel additive do the same job?
On a direct-injection engine the fuel is sprayed into the cylinder and does not wash over the intake valves, so fuel additives do not remove this carbon. It needs to be cleaned off physically.
How do I know if my car needs a carbon cleaning?
Rough idle, misfires on cold starts, hesitation and lower fuel economy are common signs. Call us with your car and what it is doing, and we will tell you whether a cleaning makes sense or whether a diagnostic should come first.
How much does a carbon cleaning cost?
The cost depends on the engine and how much carbon has built up. Send us your year, make and model and we will give you a quote.
Do you clean turbocharged engines?
Yes. We specialize in turbocharged direct-injection engines and have extensive experience with modern BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz engines.
Is the work covered by a warranty?
Yes. Our work is covered by our 1-year warranty.
Can I finance a carbon cleaning?
Financing is available on repairs and services for vehicles less than 10 years old, with no credit check. See the financing details.
